Florida Alliance for Retired Americans legislative conference was held last week in Tallahassee.The conference opened with a press event in the Capitol Rotunda.50 Alliance members, AFL-CIO state leadership and community allies attended.FLARA President Tony Fransetta organized business and elected officials from both parties to speak for a bill that incorporated senior housing language. Janegall Boyd (Pres./CEO of Florida Association of Homes & Services for Aging, Steve Protulis (Executive Director of Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation), Representatives Abruzzo and Mayfield, all spoke in support.Senior housing is a priority issue for FLARA.FLARA leadership has been working with State Senators and Representatives for over three years to accomplish the inclusion of comprehensive planning language for senior housing in local planning. Under current law, local comprehensive plans are required to include housing elements for low-income, very low-income and moderate-income families, mobile homes, group home facilities and foster care facilities but not for seniors.

The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans will hold its Annual Convention and Quarterly Executive Board Meeting on June 7th and 8th, 2010 at the DoubleTree Hotel (Universal Orlando Entrance), 5780 Major Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32819. We ask that you arrive on Sunday, June 6th, 2010 and check in at the hotel.Our meeting will begin Monday, June 7th from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., with a break for lunch (provided by FLARA).We will meet again on Tuesday, June 8th, at 9:00 a.m. with a break from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch (provided by FLARA).This is a tentative schedule with the possibility of change. The hotel room rate for FLARA members and guests is $99.00 plus tax per night, which includes parking and internet.Please note that there are a limited number of rooms available at this rate and the cutoff date for room reservations is Tuesday, May 7th, 2010 so please make your reservations ASAP.When making your reservations please call the hotel reservations department at 800-327-2110 and identify yourself as an attendee of Florida Alliance for Retired Americans. Registration fee for the Annual Convention is $80.00 per member.Guest reservation fee is $ 60.00.
