Strengthen Social Security
On Monday, August 9, 2010 in Delray Beach, Florida seniors and members of the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans attended Senior Forum hosted by Congressman Ted Deutch. Bill Cea, Executive Board member and Director of Southern Region for the Alliance for Retired Americans addressed the group at the senior forum.Mr. Cea spoke about the benefits and improvements to Medicare under the new health care law.He also highlighted the truth about Social Security – that it belongs to the people who worked hard all their lives and contributed to it, and that it is a promise that must not be broken.“Bill Cea emphasized that Social Security and Medicare programs are funded through worker contributions and therefore should be considered as insurance programs and not welfare handouts”. Social Security benefits 3,547,500 people in Florida and pumps $45.5 billion into the Florida economy. Florida Alliance President Tony Fransetta made the following statement: "America’s Social Security trust fund was built up in preparation for the retirement of the baby boomers. However, the government has been borrowing from Social Security surpluses for decades, and this has masked the true size of the deficit. Now with the deficit sky rocketing, the federal government owes Social Security $2.6 trillion, and some in Washington are proposing to cut benefits in order to pay for the deficit. “We joined Congressman Deutch today to highlight the good works of Social Security and to wish it many more happy years.More than ever, Florida workers and retirees need to know Social Security will be there for them.”
The Florida Alliance for Retired Americans is a thriving statewide activist retiree organization with over 200,000 members in Florida and over 3 million members nationally. We aim to influence government on retiree legislative and political issues at the federal, state and local levels. Our mission is to ensure social and economic justice and full civil rights for all citizens, so they may enjoy lives of dignity, personal and family fulfillment and security.
